Doggie Treats: Fruits Instead of Cookies?
I received an inquiry from a dog owner about whether the following ingredients for making cookies for dogs are OK ingredients:
1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
1/4 cup of cornmeal
1/2 cup soy flour
1/4 cup wheat germ (Vitamin C, iron and protein)
1 tsp. bone meal (calcium and phosphorus)
1/4 cup sunflower seeds (protein and Vitamin E)
2 Tbs. rice bran oil (Vitamin E and antioxidants)
1/4 cup organic chunky peanut butter
1/4 cup skim milk
2 eggs, whipped
The above list of ingredients for making doggie cookies include whole wheat flour, soy flour and corn meal. These three ingredients plus other
flour based ingredients are common ingredients in so many dog food products today. I know that many of you know that processed grains are not good for dogs' health, but do you know why they are harmful to dogs health? The following paragraph will explain the main reasons why you should avoid feeding flour based ingredients to your dog.
Sugars from processed flours do not burn clean. They burn incompletely in the body because they are lacking many nutrients like enzymes and minerals. The sugar molecule from flour is not broken down to its most fundamental components but rather, into pieces that carry two or three of the six atoms (carbon atoms) of which the sugar was made. The two-unit product is alcohol and the three-unit product is lactic acid. From eating flour based foods like cookies, a dog's intestinal tract will make alcohol in the intestines every day. The dog's body must burn the alcohol as it can not save it as in the case of lactic acid. Alcohol interferes with the primary function of many different enzymes, especially enzymes called cytochrome P450 that are the main workers in the body's detoxification system (liver).
Sugars from fruits, on the other hand, will burn clean and release all of their energy, the carbon, oxygen and hydrogen atoms plus the sugar will become water and carbon dioxide.
So if you want to give a sweet treat to your dog, please don't give them cookies, instead give them fruits. The best cookies for dogs are ripe fruits organically grown (mangoes, bananas, papayas, figs, melons and dates).
If you want to read more about the negative side effects of flour based foods like cookies and other processed foods (breads, rice and pasta) on the body's detoxification system, please read Sidney Baker's, M.D., book titled Detoxification and Healing.
